Gift Aid FAQ’s

We have gathered some of the most frequently asked questions relating to Gift Aid below.

If you are unsure about anything please feel free to contact us on 01225 874222.

What does Gift Aid mean?

If you are a UK tax payer you are eligible to claim Gift Aid on any donations you make to Send a Cow. This means we will be able to reclaim the basic rate tax (20%) from the government on the amount you give, for example a £100 donation is worth £125 or a £1000 donation means Send a Cow receives £1250.

Do I qualify for Gift Aid?

Your donations will qualify as long as they are not more than 4 times what you have paid in tax in that tax year (6 April to 5 April). The tax could have been paid on income or capital gains.

Please let us know if you stop paying enough tax.

How do I allow my donation to be included in Gift Aid?

When you first donate to Send a Cow we will ask you to fill in a Gift Aid declaration form. You need to make a Gift Aid declaration for each charity you donate to. If you haven’t filled in a form please contact us and we can organise one for you.

You can include all donations from the last four years, but do let us know if there are any tax years where you didn’t pay enough tax to claim.

How long does Gift Aid last for?

Our Gift Aid declaration covers any previous donations within the last four years, present donations and future donations. This will continue so long as you are eligible and are a UK tax payer. For some larger gifts we may require you to sign additional declarations.

What happens if me tax status changes or I want to stop claiming Gift Aid?

You will need to let us know if your tax status changes as we may no longer be able to reclaim Gift Aid on your donations. If this changes or you wish to cancel your declaration please call us on 01225 874222

I pay higher tax: what does that mean for my donation?
If you pay tax at a rate of 40% or above, you can claim back 20% (the difference between the higher and basic rate of tax on your donation). You can do this: - Through your self-assessment tax return - By asking HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) to amend your tax code For example: You donate £5000 to Send a Cow We claim Gift Aid to make your donation £6250 You can personally claim back £1250.00 (£6250 x 20%)
A £5000 donation only costs you £3750.
Can I cancel my Gift Aid Declaration?

If you wish, you can cancel your declaration at any time. Please let us know if you no longer pay sufficient tax to cover the tax that we reclaim. The cancellation will take effect from the time we receive your letter.
